What to Expect at Your First Visit with Dr. Ellen

What to Expect at Your First Visit with Dr. Ellen

Jun 10, 2026

Taking the first step toward addressing your health concerns can feel both hopeful and overwhelming, especially if you've spent months or even years looking for answers.

Many of the patients who come to see me aren't starting their health journey.

They've already seen other providers, tried different treatments, and often been told that their labs look normal or that their symptoms are simply part of getting older.

By the time they arrive in my office, they're often carrying more than symptoms. They're carrying frustration, uncertainty, and a long list of unanswered questions.

So what can you expect on your first visit?

First, I Listen

Before we talk about tests, supplements, or treatment plans, I want to hear your story.

Your symptoms didn't appear in isolation, and they rarely tell the whole story on their own.

That's why our first visit focuses on understanding you as a whole person—not just a collection of symptoms.

New patient visits are scheduled for one hour, giving us dedicated time to discuss your health concerns, medical history, symptoms, and the factors that may be influencing how you feel.

While there is still a timeframe, the goal is to create enough space to have a meaningful conversation and begin connecting the dots.

We'll discuss:

  • Your current health concerns
  • When symptoms began
  • Changes you've noticed over time
  • Previous diagnoses or treatments
  • Your health history
  • Lifestyle factors that may be influencing how you feel

Many patients tell me this is the first time they've felt truly heard during a medical appointment.

"Dr. Ellen Heinitz is an amazing healthcare provider. She listens; she doesn't rush you. She makes wonderful suggestions about nutrition as well as health. I can't recommend her enough."

Looking for Patterns, Not Just Problems

One symptom can have many possible causes.

Fatigue, for example, may be connected to thyroid function, hormones, stress, sleep quality, nutrient deficiencies, digestive health, or a combination of factors.

Rather than looking at each symptom separately, I look for patterns.

Think of it like putting together a puzzle. Each symptom, lab result, life event, and health history detail provides a piece of information. My job is to step back and look at how those pieces fit together.

Often, the bigger picture reveals connections that may have been overlooked before.

A Physical Exam and Appropriate Testing

Depending on your health concerns, I may perform a physical examination during your visit.

If additional information is needed, we may discuss laboratory testing or other assessments that can help clarify what's happening beneath the surface.

Testing is never ordered simply for the sake of testing. The goal is to gather meaningful information that helps guide a personalized plan of care.

Beginning a Personalized Plan

If you're dealing with a specific concern, we may begin discussing treatment options during your first visit.

These recommendations may include:

  • Nutrition and lifestyle strategies
  • Stress-management support
  • Targeted supplements when appropriate
  • Further evaluation or testing
  • A roadmap for next steps

Every plan is individualized because every patient is different.

What Makes a Naturopathic Approach Different?

One of the biggest differences patients notice is that we spend time looking for the root cause of symptoms rather than simply managing them.

Instead of asking, "How do we make this symptom go away?"

We ask:

  • Why is it happening?
  • What systems may be contributing?
  • What does the body need to function better?

This approach helps create a more complete understanding of your health and supports long-term wellness rather than temporary symptom relief.

You Don't Need to Have All the Answers

Many people worry that they need to arrive with a complete timeline, a perfect symptom tracker, or a clear understanding of what's wrong.

You don't.

Your job is simply to tell your story.

My job is to listen, ask questions, and help put the pieces together.

If you've been feeling frustrated, unheard, or stuck without answers, know that you don't have to navigate it alone.

Every health journey starts with a conversation—and sometimes that conversation is the first step toward finally understanding what your body has been trying to tell you all along.

“I was going to doctors for many years, but she was the only one who figured out it was my Thyroid giving me problems.”

If this resonates with you, if you've been feeling frustrated, unheard, or stuck without answers, it may be time for a different approach.

Dr. Ellen takes the time to listen, look at the bigger picture, and help uncover the root causes behind your symptoms. If you're ready to start putting the pieces together, schedule a consultation and begin your journey toward better health.
